As the founder of ElmFrank, Julian has spent more than three decades helping organisations define who they are, understand what makes them different and create brands that inspire confidence, build trust and stand the test of time.
His career has spanned independent businesses, consumer brands, corporate identities and international organisations. Throughout that journey, he has combined strategic thinking with creative excellence to create brands that are distinctive, commercially effective and built for the future.
Julian's creative journey began at the age of sixteen when he earned a place at Shelley Park, the prestigious foundation campus of Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design in Dorset.
There he completed his National Diploma in Art & Design before progressing to a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design. He later graduated with a BA (Hons) in Design from the University of Wales, College Newport.
His ability to combine conceptual thinking with creative craft was recognised early. While studying, his work was selected for exhibition at London's prestigious Mall Galleries. In 1996, he received the International Society of Typographic Designers Award, one of the design profession's most respected honours, recognising excellence in typography, concept and visual communication.
His tutor and mentor, the renowned designer Tim Foster, recognised something distinctive in Julian's approach: an ability to combine creative originality with strategic thinking. That combination would become the foundation of his career.
Building Experience
Julian entered the creative industry during the mid 1990s, joining leading design agencies where he developed his craft alongside some of the industry's most respected designers and strategists.
These formative years exposed him to major brands, ambitious creative thinking and the realities of building businesses through strong ideas.
During this period, Julian contributed to projects for internationally recognised brands including Coca Cola, Malibu, B&Q, Max Factor, Baby Organix, Boddingtons, Ruddles Smooth and Panda Pops.
He also helped establish the original branding for Triple Eight Racing under Derek Warwick, a team that would go on to become the most successful in British Touring Car Championship history.
Among the work were early concepts that contributed to campaigns including Diet Coke Break and the memorable slogan Thirsty?
These experiences shaped Julian's understanding of branding. He learned that successful brands are never created through design alone. They are built by understanding people, uncovering purpose, creating clarity and aligning creativity with commercial ambition.
Design became the visible expression of strategy rather than a substitute for it.
Facelift Design
In 1999, Julian founded Facelift Design, creating an independent consultancy built around creativity, authenticity and strategic thinking.
What began as a small studio developed into one of the South Coast's most respected independent branding consultancies, working with organisations across the UK and internationally.
Within its first year, Facelift Design secured what had once been the largest client of Julian's first agency. It was a significant milestone, not simply because of the commercial success, but because it demonstrated the value of resilience, professionalism and consistently delivering exceptional work.
Soon afterwards, Julian became a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers, recognising his contribution to the design profession.
Over the following twenty five years, Facelift Design became known for delivering far more than visual identity.
Clients valued Julian's ability to simplify complex challenges, uncover what truly differentiated an organisation and translate those insights into brands with clarity, confidence and commercial impact.
His approach was highly collaborative. Rather than simply presenting finished solutions, Julian worked alongside leadership teams, exploring ideas, challenging assumptions and developing concepts together.
Often, ideas were sketched and refined in real time, allowing organisations to see possibilities, create alignment and make stronger decisions.
As his career evolved, clients increasingly sought Julian's involvement before design was even considered. They recognised that the real challenge was rarely the logo. The real challenge was understanding who they were, what they stood for and how they could communicate that with confidence.
Perspective
Those who have worked closely with Julian often describe him in similar terms: thoughtful, authentic and refreshingly frank.
That perspective has been shaped by both professional experience and personal events that changed the way he views life, relationships and success.
Experiencing profound loss at a young age gave Julian an appreciation for what truly matters. It reinforced the importance of authenticity over ego, substance over appearance and purpose over popularity.
These principles continue to influence his approach to branding.
Clients value Julian not simply because he creates strong creative work, but because he challenges them to think differently. He asks the questions others avoid, removes complexity and helps organisations uncover truths they may have overlooked.
It is this combination of strategic clarity and creative thinking that has built long standing relationships with organisations across multiple sectors.
Heritage
The philosophy behind ElmFrank did not begin in a design studio. In many ways, it began generations earlier.
On Julian's father's side of the family, his grandmother's maiden name was Best.
During the First World War, Julian's great grandfather Walter Best served during the Gallipoli Campaign.During one of the campaign's most devastating battles, Walter rescued Major Cadbury, pulling him to safety in circumstances where his own life was at significant risk.
That act of courage created a connection that would shape both families' futures. In gratitude, Major Cadbury later offered Walter lifelong employment managing one of his estates on England's south coast.
For Julian, the importance of this story is not simply the historical connection. It represents something deeper: the belief that one person's actions can create opportunities and influence generations beyond their own lifetime.
Legacy is not only about what we leave behind. It is about what we enable others to build.
The name ElmFrank reflects that same philosophy.
Elm draws inspiration from the origins of the Nelmes family name, associated with those who lived among the great elm trees, a symbol of strength, resilience and deep roots.
Frank is a family name carried through Julian's maternal lineage and his own middle name, Francis. It also reflects the quality clients most often associate with him: honesty, openness and a willingness to say what needs to be said.
Together, ElmFrank represents strong foundations, clear thinking and a straightforward approach to building brands.
ElmFrank
ElmFrank is the culmination of more than thirty years spent understanding how successful brands are built.
It was created from the belief that branding is one of an organisation's most valuable strategic assets.
A strong brand creates alignment internally, confidence externally and value commercially.
Every ElmFrank engagement begins with understanding the organisation itself, including its purpose, ambition, culture and future direction. Only then does the creative process begin.
The result is branding that is distinctive, meaningful and built to endure.
We make strong brands, with a Frank approach.
The Idea That Came Full Circle
Every career has defining moments, and for Julian one of the most significant came at the very beginning.
In 1996, as a young designer at his first agency, Selling Ideas, Julian was ambitious, eager to progress and determined to make his mark in the industry.
After being approached by another agency, he made the decision to print his CV from the studio.
At the time, printing worked very differently. Files were sent to a printer queue, processed through a RIP system and could sit waiting for several minutes before eventually appearing.
Julian sent the document to print and went upstairs.
When he returned, the Managing Director was standing beside the printer with his CV in his hands.
The moment was over before Julian had the opportunity to explain.
He was called into the office and dismissed.
As he left, he was given words that would stay with him:
"You'll never make it in the design industry."
Rather than allowing those words to define him, Julian used them as motivation.
Over the following years, he developed his craft within leading agencies, worked with major global brands and gained the experience that would eventually lead to the creation of Facelift Design.
In 2000, the story began to turn full circle.
Facelift Design secured Selling Ideas' largest client as its first major client win.
The same agency where Julian had once been told he would never succeed became part of the proof that determination, ideas and quality work ultimately speak louder than early judgement.
More than twenty five years later, the story evolved again.
The original Selling Ideas agency no longer existed, but the name and the idea behind it remained.
Julian acquired the Selling Ideas trademark and the SellingIdeas.com domain, transforming the name that marked the beginning of his career into the foundation of a new chapter.
Today, alongside ElmFrank, Selling Ideas has been relaunched as a dedicated consumer brand and growth agency, helping ambitious businesses create demand, connect with audiences and accelerate growth.
Together, ElmFrank and Selling Ideas represent two connected stages of building successful brands.
ElmFrank helps organisations define their purpose, positioning and identity.
Selling Ideas helps those brands engage consumers, create momentum and achieve growth.
What began as a difficult moment early in Julian's career ultimately became one of the defining stories behind it.
The Philosophy Continues
After more than thirty years in the industry, Julian remains driven by the same curiosity that first led him into design: understanding people, solving complex challenges and finding the ideas that have the power to move organisations forward.
Technology will continue to evolve. Markets will continue to change. Trends will come and go.
However, the principles behind enduring brands remain constant. Clarity, purpose, authenticity and trust.
That is the philosophy behind ElmFrank and Selling Ideas.
Building brands is not simply about creating something that looks different. It is about creating something that means something, something that connects with people, creates value and continues to grow long after it is launched.
The strongest brands do more than attract attention. They create belief, build relationships and leave a legacy.
Creating brands designed for long-term recognition.
